Damascene Gallery is pleased to announce the launching of our Hand Painted Artwork Category! Our paintings are 100% authentic oil paintings painted by our partner artists who have exceptional skill in reproducing the works of famous Russian/Orthodox painters.
To begin with, we are making available the famous painting by Mikhail Nesterov, “The Vision of the Youth Bartholomew”, which is a striking painting full of spiritual depth. This painting depicts the youth Bartholomew, the future St Sergius of Radonezh, during a miraculous encounter he had with an old monk. Prior to this encounter, Bartholomew had great difficulty learning to read. Following this miraculous event, however, learning came very easy to him. St Sergius is one of the principle saints in Russian Orthodoxy who was a holy ascetic and founder of the Holy Trinity Lavra, one of the great spiritual centers today in Russia.
Below, you may see the comparison photo which shows the original image given to our partner artist and the resulting painting. I have no doubt that you will be as impressed with their skill as we are!
We are working hard to add more paintings to this category in the coming weeks, beginning with several other paintings fashioned after originals by Nesterov, one of our favorite paintings. Due to the artistry involved with these beautiful originals, the lead time on hand painted artwork is 2 to 4 months, so bear this in mind when ordering.
Several characteristics of our paintings are as follow:
- 100% hand painted in oil on artist grade canvas
- Currently available in 2 sizes (largest dimension 36″ or 48″) – other sizes available upon request
- Finished with an abrasion resistant varnish
As we work to add additional pieces to this category, do not hesitate to contact us if there is a particular painting you would like to have produced.
Several beautiful pieces have been added to our Giclee Art Print category including a print of a beautiful painting produced through Damascene Gallery: “The Vision of the Youth Bartholomew”, which is a modern rendering of the striking original by Mikhail Nesterov, the famous Russian Painter. Several “Cossack” related pieces were also added.
As before, our Giclee Art Prints are:
- Produced on archival canvas
- Printed using archival, pigment-based inks
- Finished with UV inhibiter varnish to provide color trueness and abrasion resistance
The new pieces can be viewed on the storefront here.

- Archival, pigment based inks
- Our unique, color enhancing, UV inhibiting lacquer
- A 2.5″ canvas border around all images to allow for stretching
Our collection is available for viewing by clicking here.
Several of our initial launch images are viewable in the gallery below.
We have published our first video, which outlines our vision for mounted icons and an overview of our work in the hills of West Virginia. Please spread the word!
The history and charter of Damascene Gallery has been added to the Damascene Gallery homepage including our initial launch in 2010 on the feastday of the Icon “Not Made by Hands”, the origin of our unique high quality panel design and much more. The following sums up the reason for our existence:
“Our hope at Damascene Gallery is really very simple: we are successful to the extent that our work succeeds in drawing all of us to a deeper spiritual life, to a deeper awareness of our own frailty and need for repentance and to the union of our souls with Christ, the image of the Invisible God.”

Damascene Gallery is pleased to offer full service Photoshop work with our printed icons. In doing so we are willing to work with churches to retrofit any existing iconostasis with new icons. We would also like to mention that both background colors and orthography are changeable in accordance with the customer’s preference.
The above photos are one example of our work. Please note that the first photo is before the retrofit while the remaining are after. In this particular iconostasis all halos have been gilt.
