Questions Frequently Asked of Damascene Gallery

Damascene Gallery Mounted Icons

  • What is the normal lead-time on your Mounted Icons?

The vast majority of Damascene Gallery icons are made-to-order and, thus, have a lead-time of between 7 and 15 days.  In some cases, it is possible to expedite icons.
  • What is the return policy on icons?

We stand behind our icons 100% and gladly accept returns or exchanges whenever there are issues of quality or workmanship.  That said, because our icons are made-to-order, returns are generally not accepted when no defect is present.  Return requests are thus evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
  • What do you mean by “High Quality Mounted Icons”?

Our use of the term “High Quality Mounted Icons” simply indicates that we use the highest quality materials possible in constructing our icons.  We do not use plywood or particle board, preferring instead to use solid-wood (poplar) panels, sanded to a perfectly flat finish.  Because we use such high quality panels, traditional hardwood (oak) support slats are inserted in the reverse of the panel to prevent warpage.  Our panels are identical to those used for centuries in creating hand painted icons.

For our prints, archival, pigment-based inks are used.  The print medium is a special artist grade canvas selected for its extremely unobtrusive weave.  Our mounted icons are not “paper prints” glued to a piece of wood, but rather a combination of carefully selected high-quality components that together give our icons a look and feel like no other.
  • Can you explain Damascene Gallery’s approach to icon sizing?

Most of our icons in the icon shop come in 5 basic “add to cart” sizes: 9″, 10″, 12″, 14″ and 16″.  These dimensions refer to the maximum printed dimension of the icon.  For example, if an icon has a larger vertical dimension than the horizontal dimension, the vertical dimension will be held to the selected size.

That said, it is extremely important to understand that the “other” dimension of icons “floats” depending on the selected size.  An icon with a 9″ vertical dimension will not necessarily have a 7″ horizontal dimension even though 7×9″ artwork is a common size.  Reproductions of icons will match the original ratio of length and width and this varies with each icon.

If you wish to determine what the width of your icon will be (or the height if your icon has a larger horizontal dimension), save the product image from the storefront and examine it’s length and width.  Your width can be determined from the following formula:

Resulting Width = Selected Height x (Image Width / Image Height)
  • Are your icons available in more sizes than the “options” on the website?

Yes! We are reworking our descriptions on all of our icons so that the maximum printable dimension will be listed along with a link to request a non-standard size.  We will also be offering smaller sizes (than 9″) beginning in March of 2012.  In the meantime, if you are interested in a non-standard size on any of our icons, please let us know and we’ll be happy to accommodate your request.
  • Do your icons have a recessed “kovcheg” where the image is affixed?

No.  At this time, our icon panels are flat without kovcheg.
  • Do you offer gold-leafing to your mounted icons?

We have produced many icons with gilded halos and are currently working to make this an optional add-on to any of our icons (a benefit of using the canvas).  Until this service is made available through the website, gilding requests are handled on a case by case basis.
